About LLL

A listening, living & learning house (LLL house) is students living together in a house. The participants have a specific theme for the year and engage in conversation on the theme for the year that they live together. The students in the LLL house are ideally a small diverse group of students from different faculties, gender, race, background and nationality.

Each LLL house adopts a theme for the year. The house hosts a conversation around the theme inviting academics, civil servants, experts and other people to join the conversation in the house. Each LLL house also engages in a small community project.

The LLL initiative draws inspiration from the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) and especially endorses STIAS’s view that:

“it is critical to nurture a future generation of independent thinkers and leaders. Leaders are those who not only understand the realities of a changing world, but who also have the ability and skills to implement these new advances to the benefit of their communities.”

The LLL Initiative is an experiential learning process that aids students in identifying and adjusting perceptions of ‘the other’ (those who are different from them). Participating students discover vastly different perspectives and have the unique opportunity to form friendships, to engage with experts on the theme of their house and to connect with the guide of their LLL house.
